If you are looking for some fun and interesting exhibits to visit in Pittsburg, you may want to check out the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens or the Nationality Rooms. Both locations are venues of learning that will have you leaving with more knowledge than when you arrived.
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
Phipps Conservatory was opened to the public on December 7, 1896. Over the years, the building has evolved into the beautiful gardens that you now see today. While visiting the conservatory and botanical gardens, visitors can enjoy selections of orchids, bonsai, desert plants, ferns, and plants that produce fruit and spices. You can also find plants that are native to the region of Pittsburgh at the Center for Sustainable Landscapes.
There are many rooms you can explore at the Conservatory and Gardens, including aquatic gardens with water-lily filled pools, a discovery garden that gives kids hands-on fun with a sensory outdoor garden and nature play area. A fern room lets you explore the age of the dinosaurs while the tropical forest conservatory lets you explore a tropical warehouse. There are also many exhibits and events that are held at the Conservatory throughout the year, so be sure to check out their events page.
The Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens are open from Monday to Thursday from 9:30 to 5 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. On the weekends, the hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission for adults is $17.95 per person while seniors over 62 years old and students are $16.95. Children between 2 and 18 are $11.95.
Nationality Rooms
The Nationality Rooms are located at the University of Pittsburg. They can be found on the first and third floors of the Cathedral of Learning. These rooms were developed to provide students unique rooms that provided cultural references to nations that had diplomatic recognition from the United States government.
The University originally raised money for 19 rooms to be created by 1957. These rooms included German, Italian, Chinese, Czechoslovakia, and Greek rooms that are located on the first floor. In 1987, more rooms were developed on the third floor. Examples of these are from the countries Ukraine, Austria, India, Turkey, and Korea. You can visit the website to see a complete list of Nationality Rooms.
These rooms function as university classrooms, but you can enjoy an audiotape tour on the weekends during the fall and spring terms. When classes aren’t in session, you can enjoy tours from Monday to Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Prices are $4 for adults and $2 for youth between 6 and 18 years old.
While visiting the Nationality Rooms, be sure to stop by the Gift Center that sells memorabilia that educates the public of traditions and history of the cultures of the countries.
Both the Nationality Rooms and Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens offer visitors a chance to enjoy the beauty of nature and different cultures. Whether you visit one or both of these locations, you will be sure to have an enjoyable time.
